Environment, Conservation and Ecology

The environment, conservation and ecology sector is one of the most exciting and varied career areas for anyone passionate about the natural world and sustainability. It spans roles in government agencies, research organisations, environmental consultancies, non-profits, agriculture and marine-focused organisations. This means you could find yourself working on anything from restoring habitats and monitoring species, to tackling climate change, managing ESG (environmental, social and governance) strategies for businesses, studying marine ecosystems or supporting sustainable farming practices.

If you want to break into this field, practical experience is key. Many employers expect more than just a degree, so look for opportunities to get hands-on. Volunteering with conservation projects, applying for summer internships, or taking part in university placement schemes can help you develop valuable skills and build contacts. Specialist training programmes run by environmental or marine charities can also give you experience in areas like species surveys, ecological restoration, or sustainability planning.

The sector is competitive, so keeping your options open is essential. Some roles, such as habitat management or species protection, have limited funding and fewer vacancies. In contrast, areas like environmental consultancy, ESG, sustainable agriculture and marine resource management are growing rapidly. Gaining experience across different areas can make you more adaptable and help you discover what you enjoy most.

Further study is worth considering too. Postgraduate courses in ecology, environmental management, marine science or sustainability can boost your knowledge and career prospects. Whatever path you choose, this sector offers the chance to make a real difference—whether that’s restoring ecosystems, protecting biodiversity, helping businesses reduce their environmental impact, or tackling global challenges like climate change. If you’re passionate about the planet, there’s a role for you here.
